David Sole is a former professional rugby player with many great tales to tell about his time at the top. The Scottish born sportsman was captain of the national side when they managed to prevent England from picking up a historic Grand Slam in the Five Nations competition of 1990. Playing in the forwards at prop, David had great ball handling skills and was a rugged and ferocious competitor in loose play. His debut for the Scottish side came in 1986 and was against France. It was the start of a fine career that took in 43 further full caps.
Twenty-five of those appearances came with David as the captain, leading his side from the front. Such a standout performer was he on a regular basis that David also got the call for the British & Irish Lions side that toured Australia in 1989. He played in all of the games in the test series and was a key reason the side came out victories overall. His partnership with Brian Moore and Dai Young was the stuff of legend, and David also captained the Lions on two occasions. But it was that 1990 match versus the old foes England that most remember him for. He put in a great performance to help his side take a hard fought 13-7 win and stopped England getting clean sweep against all the nations involved. David also captained and turned out for the Barbarians many times and after retiring from the game has become a popular co-commentator for BBC Scotland’s rugby union programming.
