Daniel Tailliferre Hauman van der Merwe is a rugby union player who has represented his home country of Canada numerous times.
Van der Merwe was born in South Africa, before moving with his family to Canada when he was a teenager. He played rugby throughout his high school career in both countries, making both the Under 18 and Under 21 Saskatchewan teams and going on to play in the British Columbia Premier League. His breakout came in 2007, when he was selected to play for his national team in the Rugby World Cup and made a name for himself on the international scene. This led to more international appearances in the following years, such as in the 2009 and 2010 Churchill Cup, and attracted the attention of overseas clubs thanks to his strong performances. Over the next few years, Van der Merwe played for Saracens FC, the Glasgow Warriors and the Scarlets, living up to his early reputation as a talented and dedicated player with great try scoring ability. In 2017 he signed with the Newcastle Falcons, but moved back to his former club the Glasgow Warriors in time for the 2018 Pro14.
Most recently, Van der Merwe has announced he will leave the Glasgow Warriors, maintaining his status as the team’s all time best try scorer. He continues to be one of the most sought after rugby union players, and has already earned his place in the sporting history books.
