Unwound is an influential American post-hardcore band that emerged from the vibrant music scene of the Pacific Northwest in 1988. Formed in Tumwater and Olympia, Washington, the band initially consisted of Justin Trosper, Vern Rumsey, and Brandt Sandeno, who began their journey under the name “Giant Henry.” With a commitment to innovation, they quickly evolved their sound, ultimately rebranding as Unwound and releasing their debut album, “Fake Train,” in 1993. This album marked a significant milestone as it was the first non-spoken word release from the renowned independent label Kill Rock Stars, establishing Unwound as a key player in the underground music movement.

Throughout the 1990s, Unwound recorded seven albums, including critically acclaimed works such as “Repetition” and “Challenge for a Civilized Society.” Their music, characterized by dissonant guitar tones and complex rhythms, garnered a dedicated cult following and positioned them as pioneers of noise rock and post-hardcore. The band’s relentless touring schedule and commitment to all-ages venues showcased their dedication to accessibility and community engagement, further solidifying their reputation in the indie music landscape.

In 2001, Unwound released their self-produced double album, “Leaves Turn Inside You,” which marked a stylistic shift towards post-rock and avant-garde influences. After years of speculation about a reunion, Unwound reformed in 2022 to honor the memory of Vern Rumsey, who passed away in 2020. The new lineup, featuring Trosper, Sara Lund, Jared Warren, and Scott Seckington, embarked on a successful tour in 2023, delighting fans with their powerful performances and reaffirming their status as a cornerstone of the post-hardcore genre.
