AJ Howard is a dynamic Football coach currently serving as the outside linebackers coach for the Appalachian State Mountaineers, a position he assumed in February 2023. A former standout player for App State, Howard has quickly made a name for himself in coaching, earning recognition as a member of the Football Coaches Association’s 35 Under 35 Class for 2024 in his first year. His coaching prowess was evident as he mentored true freshman Nate Johnson, who achieved Freshman All-American honors with an impressive 7.5 sacks and 8.5 tackles for loss.
Before returning to his alma mater, Howard enjoyed a successful playing career, highlighted by his time with the New England Patriots, where he was part of the Super Bowl-winning team in the 2018-19 season. Following his playing days, he transitioned into coaching as a graduate assistant at the University of Louisville, where he contributed to the defensive unit during the 2020 season. His experience as a Southeast area scout for the Patriots further honed his skills in player evaluation and development.
Howard’s collegiate career at App State was marked by significant achievements, including three consecutive bowl victories and All-Sun Belt honors during his junior and senior years. He played a pivotal role in leading the Mountaineers to their first two Sun Belt Conference titles, showcasing his leadership and defensive skills on the field.
