Eliza Stone is an American sabre fencer who has been ranked as one of the top-ten female fencers in the world three times during her long career. She also won individual and team gold at the 2019 Pan American Games and has won several medals from various World Championships, including team gold in 2014 and individual bronze in 2018. Her most recent triumphs include a gold medal from the Zone Championships in Paraguay in June 2022.
Stone, whose birth name is Anne-Elizabeth Stone, was born in Oklahoma on New Year’s Eve 1990. She grew up in Chicago and took ballet lessons before first trying fencing at the age of ten. The sport became a big part of her homeschooling, and she and her siblings all went on to fence for the world-renowned Princeton University. Stone joined Team USA in time for the 2012/13 fencing season and made an immediate impact by making the final of the Pan American Championships, losing only to a two-time Olympic champion. The following year, she won her first World Cup event and helped the national team to take the collective gold medal at the World Championships.
Years of success followed, but her career reached a fresh peak in early 2019 when she reached the top of the national rankings for the first time. Six months later, she won gold at the Pan American Games, taking her to a career-high fifth in the world rankings. Away from fencing, she is currently studying for a PhD at the Uniformed Services University of the Health Services (USUHS) in Maryland and will graduate in 2026.
