Charles Oliveira is a renowned Brazilian professional mixed martial artist and practitioner of Brazilian jiu-jitsu. He currently competes in the Lightweight decision of the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC). Oliveira is the proud holder of several UFC records, most notably the most submission wins in the history of the organization. He also boasts the most finishes, and as of August 2022 he took the top spot in the UFC lightweight rankings. More recently, as of March 2023, he reached #9 in the UFC men’s pound-for-pound rankings.
Born into a poor family in a favela in his home country, Oliveira was introduced to Brazilian jiu-jitsu at the age of 12. He won his first junior tournament, the São Paulo State Championship in 2003, and was awarded his black belt in 2010. After being identified as one of the best fighting prospects in Brazil, Oliveira signed for the UFC in 2010, winning 14 bouts in a row. As of the end of 2022, his win-loss record stood at an impressive 33-9. During his illustrious career in the UFC he has won countless accolades including the UFC Lightweight Championship, over a dozen Performance of the Night awards, several Fight of the Night awards as well as the ESPY Award for 2022 Fighter of the Year.
