Versatile centre back, Gary Caldwell, earned his rightful place in the Scottish FA International roll of honour due to playing over 50 games for his home nation. His most successful years were at Celtic, where the commanding presence won the Scottish Premiership twice, Scottish Cup once, and Scottish League Cup once. Caldwell was also part of the legendary Wigan Athletic squad that won the FA Cup in the 2012-2013 season. Due to his individual success in Glasgow, Caldwell was awarded SFWA Footballer of the Year and SFWA International Player of the Year.
Caldwell played for a host of top teams within the UK, such as Newcastle United, Darlington, Coventry City, Derby County, Hibernian, Celtic and Wigan Athletic. Caldwell became a cult hero at Celtic due to his direct playing style and passion for the club. Celtic fans would often chant “heid” when centre back was in possession of the ball. After being selected as the Writers’ Player of the Year for the 2008–09 season, Caldwell became a recognised star throughout the UK football scene.
Caldwell’s confidence and knowledge of the game meant that he was destined for a career in management after he hung up his boots. The Scot has enjoyed spells at Wigan Athletic, Chesterfield, and Partick Thistle. Most recently, Caldwell was named interim manager of Newcastle United’s U23s team in 2021, showing that his vast experience will now be shaping the future stars of the game.
