Regarded as one of the greatest Swedish players of all time, former Sweden captain Henrik Larsson played for his home nation in three FIFA World Cups and three UEFA European Championships. The all-time great even helped Sweden to win a bronze medal at the 1994 World Cup. He finished his international career with 37 goals in 106 matches. The silky Swede also won the Golden Ball, the annual award for best Swedish footballer twice, first in 1998 and once again in 2004. In 2003, he was named the Greatest Swedish Footballer of the Last 50 Years as part of the prestigious UEFA Jubilee Awards. On top of all this, Larsson still holds his place as all-time leading goal scorer in the UEFA Europa League.
As a player, Larsson was a lethal striker. Earning legend status at Celtic scoring 174 goals in 221 games, the goal getter moved to European superpower – Barcelona. This proved to be good business for the Catalan giants, as he helped the club win two league titles and the 2005–06 UEFA Champions League, providing the assists for both goals in the captivating final.
Larsson’s passion and understanding for the game has now earned him the coveted position of assistant coach to Ronald Koeman at his beloved Barcelona. Now helping to manage one of the best clubs in Europe, Larsson has shown that mediocrity is not an option. With his contract lasting until 2022, it is likely that Barcelona could achieve European greatness once again under the Swede’s influence.
