Best known for hosting The Tonight Show with Jay Leno for 17 years, this icon of American TV is also a stand up comedian and writer.
During his early career, Leno starred in several dramas and films in minor roles. These included American Hot Wax, Polyester and Laverne and Shirley. He also appeared on television on Late Night with David Letterman, and became a regular stand-in host on The Tonight Show in 1986. In 1992 he became the permanent host of the programme, presenting the hugely popular late night talk show until 2009. During his tenure The Tonight Show was consistently the most watched show in the late night programming slot, becoming an iconic fixture on American TV and making Leno a household name. He also continued to perform stand up comedy during this time, becoming known as a prolific performer and dedicated entertainer. In 2009 it was announced he would be presenting a new show, The Jay Leno Show, but following feedback from viewers he returned to The Tonight Show to host for another five years.
Since leaving The Tonight Show, Leno has continued to perform across the US and Canada, as well as regularly appearing on television. As a well known car enthusiast, he has hosted Jay Leno’s Garage on CNBC since 2014, and has a regular column in Popular Mechanics. This icon of television is now in his 70’s but continues to be at the top of his game, having well and truly earned his place in the entertainment history books.
