Lorena Feijoo and her younger sister Lorna Feijoo are international ballet stars from Cuba. They have both performed as Principal Dancers in acclaimed ballets. They were born in Havana and their mother was a member of the Cuban National Ballet, before she became a ballet teacher. They both trained at the Ballet Nacional de Cuba, led by famous ballerina Alicia Alonso. The training is rigorous and pupils can’t start until they are 9 years old when they are mentally and physically ready.
Lorna Feijoo became a principal dancer at the National Ballet of Cuba. She danced at international festivals in Havana and on international tours.
She has performed leading roles in both classical and contemporary ballet. She has won many awards and danced in prestigious groups around the world such as The Royal Ballet, Rome Opera Ballet, La Scala, Zurich Opera, New York City and American Ballet Theatre. Now retired she is the founder of Feijoo Ballet school and has also taught in Havana.
Lorena Feijoo, like her sister, started at the Cuban National Ballet but left Cuba for wider opportunities. She was at Ballet de Monterrey, Royal Ballet of Flanders and Joffrey Ballet. From 1999 she became principal dancer of the San Francisco Ballet, she retired in 2017 and later became Associate Artistic Director of Bay Area Houston Ballet and Theatre.
There is no rivalry between the two dancers and they have a close relationship, building each other up. The sisters appeared in Sesame Street’s 39th Season where they introduced the word of the day Pirouette. In another episode they performed the Lambarena dance.
