King of the football commentators, Martin Tyler is best known for his work with Sky Sports, who he has covered Premier League and UEFA Champions League matches for since 1990. He previously worked for ITV during the 1970s and 1980s, and also provided the commentary for the FIFA video game series between 2005 and 2019. In 2003 he was voted as FA Premier League Commentator of the Decade.
Born and raised in Chester, Tyler started in sports journalism after graduating from university. He began working on LWT’s The Big Match in 1968 in a production role, but always had ambitions to be a commentator. He was given his first break in 1974 on Southern Television, and two years later he moved to Yorkshire Television, where he was included in the 1978 World Cup team. He moved to Granada TV in 1981 and by the following year he was leading ITV’s World Cup team. Throughout the 1980s he established himself as ITV’s number two commentator behind the legendary Brian Moore, but frustration at never gaining the top spot led him to join BSkyB in 1990. BSkyB became Sky Sports in 1991 and since then Tyler has led their commentary team. He has also commentated for Premier League Productions, SBS (Australia), Fox, and ESPN.
Aside from commentary, Tyler has also worked as a footballing coach for manager Alan Dowson at a number of non-league sides, which include Walton & Hersham, Kingstonian, Hampton & Richmond Borough, Woking, and Dartford.
