Former mixed martial arts fighter turned coach and trainer Renzo Gracie is part of the legendary martial arts family the Gracie family.
Gracie debuted on the vale tudo circuit, after training for his entire life with his family in Brazil. They are responsible for the development of the Brazilian jiu jitsu martial arts system and have a legacy within the martial arts world going back more than 80 years. Gracie is a sixth degree black belt in Brazilian jiu jitsu as well as a black belt in judo, and had a hugely successful professional career from 1992 to 2010. He has competed in several different promotions including the World Combat Championships, Pentagon Combat, Pride Fighting Championships and Fighting Network Rings. In 2009 he signed with the Ultimate Fighting Championship before retiring from the ring in 2010. He made a brief comeback in 2018 with a fight for the ONE Championship which he won by submission in the second round. Outside of his career as a fighter, Gracie has also worked extensively as a trainer and coach, coaching the New York Pitbulls and writing two books including Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu: Theory and Technique and Mastering Jujitsu.
This legend of the mixed martial arts world now runs his own school, the Renzo Gracie Academy in Manhattan which has affiliate schools across the world. He continues to be one of the most important figures in the sport, and in 2008 starred in a documentary called Renzo Gracie: Legacy.
