Steve Howey is a former English footballer, famous for playing for English teams including Newcastle United, Bolton Wanderers, Manchester United, Leicester City and Hartlepool United, making over 300 appearances in the Football League and Premier League during his career. A formidable central defender, Howey also earned four caps playing for the England national side and has played in Major League Soccer in the United States.
Although Howey started his career with his first club Newcastle United as a striker, Ossie Ardiles suggested moving Howey into defence, and as a centre-back he became an integral part of Kevin Keegan’s 1992/93 First Division championship winning side. Howey kept his position in the team after their promotion to the Premier League, becoming a popular figure with fans and contributing to the club’s success as they reached two FA Cup finals and finished as runners-up twice in the Premier League. After spending several successful seasons at Newcastle, he was bought by newly promoted Manchester City for nearly £2 million. Howey hit the back of the net 11 times for the club during his stay there, including a memorable equaliser against rivals Manchester United during a derby match.
In the following years Howey continued to play regularly, enjoying spells at Leicester City, Bolton, Hartlepool and a stint for New England Revolution in Major League Soccer. Following his retirement, he has worked as a coach at several clubs including Middlesbrough and Bishop Auckland, and he has also co-presented football programmes including Total Sport on BBC Newcastle alongside Simon Pryde and Marco Gabbiadini.
