Tony Dorigo is a former professional footballer, who most famously played in defence for Aston Villa, Chelsea, and Leeds United. He now works as a football pundit and co-commentator, as well as a keynote speaker. He is also an ambassador for Leeds United.
Born in Melbourne, Australia, but raised in Adelaide, Dorigo played youth football locally as well as for South Australia, and in his mid-teens was training with Adelaide City’s first team. In 1983 he wrote to 14 top-flight clubs in England to ask for a trial, and Aston Villa were the only club to respond with an offer. After a four-day trial, he signed with the Birmingham club, and made his league debut in 1984 aged 18, going on to win the club’s Player of the Year Award. He stayed at Villa for three seasons, and then signed with Chelsea for £475k, where he won their Player of the Year award in his first season. He was sold to Leeds United for £1.3 million in 1991 winning the First Division with them in his first season, as well as winning the Fans’ Player of the Year award for the same year. He stayed with the club until 1997, then joined Italian side Torino. However, due to financial reasons the club were forced to let him go after a season, and he returned to England, signing with Derby County. He was with the Rams from 1998-2000, and then spent a final season at Stoke City, where he was made club captain, before retiring in 2001 aged 35. On the international stage, Dorigo was initially called up to play for his native Australia for the 1986 World Cup qualifying campaign but his manager at Aston Villa at the time refused to let him travel. Then the FA approached Dorigo to play for England once he received his British citizenship. So in 1986 he made his England U21 debut. Then in 1989 he received his senior team call-up, going on to earn 15 caps. Since retiring he has been a football pundit with various networks, including Eurosport, Channel 5, ESPN, Sky, Al Jazeera, BT Sport, and the BBC.
Dorigo regularly connects with his legions of followers and fans through Instagram, and Twitter, posting pictures and videos about his life around football and broadcasting. He is available for that dedicated shout-out via the Cameo platform, and has an official website, tonydorigo.com.
