Tony Warner is a goalkeeper who has played for various football teams in England, Scotland and Wales, including Fulham, Millwall, Cardiff , Celtic, Aberdeen, Leeds United, Norwich City, Barnsley, Leicester City, Charlton Athletic and Tranmere Rovers. Warner made a name for himself at Millwall, where his prolific penalty saves helped him become a fan favourite, even earning his own nickname ‘Denzil’, and his own chant from the Lion’s fans. Warner was capped twice for the Trinidad and Tobago national team.
Warner began his career at Liverpool, and although he never made a first team game with the club he gained valuable experience alongside the likes of John Barnes, Bruce Grobbelaar and David James. He made an instant impact at Millwall when he moved to the club in 1999, and the team finished fifth in Division Two in 2000 and gained promotion in the following season.
Fans at the club gave Warner the nickname ‘Denzil’ after noticing his similarities with the Only Fools and Horses character, and would often chant “Denzil, Denzil what’s the score? Denzil, what’s the score?” during matches. As a sign of his popularity at the club, he was voted Player of the Year 2002–03 by the Millwall fans. Warner received a 2004 FA Cup Final medal on the insistence of Millwall manager Dennis Wise, despite being injured for the final itself. During his successful five seasons at Millwall, he made 225 competitive appearances for the club before moving on to Cardiff in 2004.
Over the following years Warner played for various other clubs around the UK, most notably in the Premier League for Fulham, and later played in net for teams in Australia and Malta. He is the current goalkeeping coach for Accrington Stanley and was also registered as player for the 2018-19 season.
