Professional Irish boxer Wayne McCullough is best known for having earned the WBC bantamweight title from 1995 to 1997. When McCullough moved to Las Vegas, he started training under Eddie Futch, who in fact decided to train McCullough after seeing him at the Olympics. He was known for fighting in neutral colours and did not have national anthems played prior to his fights. One year after turning into a pro, McCullough won the North American Boxing Federation title. In 1995, McCullough won the WBC championship by beating champion Yasuei Yakushiji in Nagoya, Japan. This made McCullough the Ireland’s first ever WBC world champion. McCullough was the first person from Ireland or even the UK to have travelled to Japan and won the belt. After that, McCullough defended his title twice before vacating the belt and moving up in weight to challenge WBC super bantamweight champion, Daniel Zaragoza. McCullough immediately became known for his durable chin and his relentless attacking style, after having fought two of boxing’s biggest punchers in Naseem Hamed and Erik Morales, against whom he went full distance. Another fact about McCullough is that he has never once been knocked down in his professional career. During his fighting career, McCullough has earned 27 wins, 18 out of which were by knockout, and only 7 losses.
